About Wax Removal

Some information on our services at Crystal Clear Ear Clinic.

At Crystal Clear Ear Clinic, we carry out a detailed consultation and assessment of your ears.

From there, we recommend a course of action featuring the safest and most effective course of action.

Microsuction is the gold standard for wax removal. We use a small speculum and suction tubing like a little hoover to remove any wax, skin build up or foreign bodies.

It is a dry procedure that needs minimal preparations of oil application and has reduced risk of infection. We use a head microscope called Vortex Oscope, which has three times magnification for safe wax removal. The patient needs to be able to sit during the procedure to minimise risk.

Ear irrigation, often called syringing, is a small machine that delivers a jet of water to remove any wax or skin impaction.

It is used for patients who are unable to sit still safely for microsuction. It is also used for patients when microsuction is unsuccessful, mainly due to over softening the wax prior to their appointment and also if they have used cotton buds or objects that impact the wax too high in the ear canal.

Irrigation is unable to be performed on some patients, depending on their history. In this instance, a patient will have a repeat appointment for microsuction and we don’t charge for follow ups.

This wax removal technique can be used if microsuction or irrigation is not appropriate for the patient, or if the wax is difficult to remove.

We can gently remove the wax with specialist hooks, forceps or little loops and take our time to not cause damage to the ear canal. The instrumentation can also be used to remove foreign bodies.
